Boutique architecture and interior design firm Medium Plenty has completely renovated the interiors of this stunning 90-year-old house in South Pasadena, as well as converting the existing garage into an ADU, where the client’s mother currently lives.
The main residence’s design goal was to open up the single-level area by flooding it with natural light via large windows and stylish skylights at various positions. A new back addition widens the living space even further, while a simple wood palette enhances the entire furnishings. This is complemented by personalized elements such as wrap-around millwork extending from the kitchen into the living room, which houses the family library and a range of collectibles, including a collection of vintage record players.

The team aimed to bridge everyone’s individual requirements and lifestyles while bringing the family of five together, with the main goal of creating’separate, yet communal living’ for the entire family. Medium Plenty also used comparable components to connect the two facades, such as the stained, black-slatted wood overhang, to guarantee that both structures—the main residence and the ADU—were coherent.

The rear ADU gives the homeowner’s mother her own private living accommodations while remaining just a few steps away from the main house. The end product is a contemporary, communal hideaway that is ideal for the entire family.
