Located on the edge of the scenic Mira channel in Costa Nova do Prado in Portugal, the “Casa Cor de Sal” celebrates modern architecture that deeply resonates with the sensibilities of its inhabitants. Crafted by Rómulo Neto Arquitetos LDA, this residence is more than just a house; it’s a reflection of memories, blending the past with the present in an architectural harmony. Located in Costa Nova do Prado, Aveiro, and completed in 2022, Casa Cor de Sal spans a total area of 400.00 m², offering a profound example of how contemporary architecture can cater to modern living needs while respecting personal histories and environmental contexts.

Photographer Ivo Tavares shares with ARCHISCENE the look of this striking seaside home project:

Rómulo Neto Arquitetos Architectural Vision and Design Challenges

The inception of Casa Cor de Sal was deeply personal for Rómulo De Almeida Neto, the main architect, who also found himself as the client. This dual role brought unique challenges, balancing professional creativity with personal desires. The design process was initially clouded by these overlapping roles but matured into a design that met dual expectations.

Rómulo and his wife’s shared vision for their home meant navigating personal tastes and functional demands, leading to a thoughtful compromise between sophisticated architectural lines and practical living spaces.

Design and Materials

The design leverages the serenity of its seaside location, with a focus on white as the dominant color to mirror the saltiness of the surrounding waters and to reflect light throughout the home. Materials like ceramics, wood, and aluminum were chosen for their durability and aesthetic appeal, ensuring that each element of the house contributed to a cohesive look.

An interior patio acts as a central hub, linking the exterior with the south facade, optimizing natural light distribution across the house. The thoughtful placement of half floors protects the basement from potential flooding while maintaining a dynamic flow between levels.

Social Spaces and Intimacy

The upper floor houses the social area, designed to host family and friends with its expansive ceiling and broad windows offering panoramic views of the estuary. This space connects to a roof terrace, described as the lighthouse of the home, providing a private retreat to enjoy the landscape.
