Balancing Light, Privacy, and Natural Form

In the Portuguese town of Oeiras, architecture firm OODA has crafted a residence that responds to the site’s irregular topography with a design rooted in its natural surroundings. The “earthenhouse” is embedded within the land, following the existing slope while maintaining an open and fluid spatial arrangement. This approach allows the home to interact with the terrain, maximizing light exposure and creating private outdoor areas without disrupting the landscape.

The westward incline initially posed a challenge due to limited sunlight, but OODA transformed this constraint into an opportunity. The U-shaped layout optimizes daylight throughout the home, improving both comfort and energy efficiency. This configuration also provides enclosed outdoor spaces shielded from view, an essential feature for the client, who required privacy. The single-story volume follows the natural contours of the site, preserving ceiling heights while reinforcing a sense of openness.

A Home Shaped by Light and Structure

At the core of the home, a central courtyard serves as both an organizing element and a unifying space. A reflective pool increases the quality of natural light, acting as a focal point while contributing to the residence’s overall atmosphere. Around this void, fluid spaces transition seamlessly between communal and private areas, encouraging a dynamic yet harmonious living environment.

OODA’s design balances geometric clarity with material richness. The upper volume, constructed in concrete, provides structural integrity while defining the architectural character of the home. A key feature is the high concrete beam, which allows for expansive, open-plan interiors without support columns. This structural choice enables uninterrupted views and reinforces the connection between interior spaces and the outdoors.

Materiality and Craftsmanship in Balance

While the concrete upper volume establishes a strong visual identity, the lower, habitable spaces incorporate wood to introduce warmth and intimacy. This contrast in materials creates a sense of depth, ensuring that the home remains both functional and inviting. Large glass openings further strengthen the relationship between indoors and outdoors, allowing natural light to filter through while framing the surrounding environment.

Unlike contemporary minimalist trends that favor stark simplicity, design by OODA integrates fine details and ergonomic considerations. The residence is designed with a focus on both craftsmanship and comfort, allowing for a refined yet approachable aesthetic. Each material choice contributes to a space that is not only architecturally coherent but also welcoming and tactile.

A Living Space Rooted in Nature

The interior of the home continues the theme of openness and connection to nature. Natural materials such as wood and stone extend throughout, reinforcing a grounded atmosphere that improves the relationship with the landscape. The spatial arrangement prioritizes fluidity, ensuring that light and air move through the home.

Custom furniture, recessed lighting, and concealed storage contribute to a thoughtfully arranged living environment. Each element has been carefully considered to improve both functionality and comfort, avoiding excess while maintaining a sense of refinement. By embracing the characteristics of its site rather than imposing upon them, OODA’s design for the earthenhouse in Oeiras presents an approach to architecture that respects both form and function.
