Postioned in the Myvatn region of Iceland, the Iceland Volcano Museum, crafted by Studio RE+N, pays homage to the majestic beauty of its surroundings. Winner of the prestigious 2023 Architecture MasterPrize in the Conceptual Architecture category, this museum seamlessly blends into the landscape with its innovative design. Architect Yuting Zhang, Co-Founder and Design Director of Studio RE+N, emphasizes the museum’s aim to integrate harmoniously with nature, providing visitors with a distinctive connection to the environment.
Inspired by the natural wonders of Myvatn, the museum’s circular structure mirrors volcanic craters and lakes, while its elongated elliptical shape aligns with the nearby Hverfjall and Dimmuborgir Lava Fields. This design creates a fluid space where indoor and outdoor environments converge, accentuated by a terraced performance deck offering panoramic views. Within, a ring of exhibition spaces encircles a reflective pool, symbolizing the essence of Myvatn’s culture.
Guests follow three routes within the museum’s design, beginning with a gradual slope leading into the interior gallery. This path offers a tranquil experience for reflection and the exploration of artworks. The exterior walkable roof acts as an observation deck, offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape, while an outdoor park loop trail invites visitors to engage with sculptures amidst the dynamic scenery. The museum’s facade, characterized by repetitive and visually permeable elements, fosters a connection with the landscape, echoing the linear patterns of Icelandic architecture and providing an ideal setting for the art pieces displayed within.
