Shaped for a location in Mexico City, Earthscraper project comes from the drawing board of BNKR Arquitectura.
The Earthscraper, originating from the creative minds at BNKR Arquitectura, is designed for a specific site in Mexico City. The Historic Center of Mexico City urgently needs a functional overhaul as it requires additional infrastructure, office spaces, retail areas, and residential units, but lacks available land. Strict federal and local regulations prevent the demolition of historical buildings, and height limits restrict new buildings to eight stories.
The Earthscraper concept emerges as a direct contrast to traditional skyscrapers in this historically sensitive area where new vertical construction is largely restricted and preservation is a priority. This project maintains the distinct skyline and the existing architectural hierarchy of the surrounding structures. It features an inverted pyramid design with a central void that ensures natural light and ventilation reach all living spaces.
Moreover, to accommodate the array of events that occur in the city square throughout the year—such as concerts, political rallies, open-air exhibitions, cultural events, and military parades—the top of this vast underground structure is capped with a glass floor. This design seamlessly integrates the bustling activities of the square above with the vibrant life of the Earthscraper below.
