The newly introduced Restaurant MMC, named Brutalism over the Sea, marks a bold architectural endeavor by the esteemed firm Zooco. Situated within the Cantabrian Maritime Museum complex in Santander, Spain, this project represents a striking fusion of contemporary design and historical context. Winner of the Architecture Masterprize 2023 award in the “Small Firm of Multidisciplinary Interior Design” category, Zooco has once again showcased its prowess in reimagining spaces.
Originally conceived as part of an architectural ensemble dating back to the late 1970s, the Cantabrian Maritime Museum underwent a transformative renovation and extension in 2003. However, Zooco’s intervention on the second floor introduces a new volume that not only addresses structural issues but also redefines the museum experience. The name Brutalism over the Sea presents the project’s architectural philosophy, emphasizing both the robustness of the design and its commanding presence against the setting of the sea.
The design concept revolves around seamlessly integrating the new structure into the existing architectural framework while making a bold statement. By incorporating four triangular elements, Zooco regularizes and complements the original paraboloid forms, redirecting attention towards the raw beauty of the concrete interior. This geometric interplay serves as the focal point within the restaurant space, inviting patrons to engage with its sculptural essence.
Externally, the design prioritizes transparency and engagement with the surrounding seascape. A glass box façade provides unobstructed views of the breathtaking Santander bay, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior. The name “Brutalism over the Sea” encapsulates the project’s ethos of celebrating brutalist aesthetics while embracing the coastal environment. With this project, Zooco has not only redefined the dining experience but also contributed a new architectural landmark to the Santander skyline.
