The requalification of the Exporlux building by Espaço Objecto, captured in photos by Ivo Tavares, marks a key milestone for one of Portugal’s largest lighting companies. This intervention was not merely an expansion but a holistic transformation that integrated the construction of a state-of-the-art lighting laboratory with comprehensive interior remodeling. Key areas such as the showroom, training spaces, and office areas have undergone substantial changes, coupled with a revamped exterior image that breathes new life into this industrial unit.
Over the years, Exporlux’s continuous growth led to a series of phased expansions that resulted in a somewhat disjointed architectural identity. Each phase reflected the materials and design philosophies of its time, creating a patchwork appearance that lacked cohesion. Espaço Objecto’s recent intervention aimed to rectify this by establishing a unified aesthetic, bringing clarity and harmony to both the building’s interior and exterior.
The architects achieved this transformation by simplifying the palette of covering and finishing materials used throughout the interior spaces. This approach not only streamlined the overall appearance but also enhanced the functionality of the spaces. For the exterior, the introduction of a curtain façade composed of vertically arranged frosted glass sheets provided a modern and sleek look. This design choice harmonized the treatment of the two main façades, while also addressing practical concerns, such as controlling solar exposure to create a more comfortable and energy-efficient environment.
A thoughtful arrangement of the glass sheets, following a logic of modulation and overlap, introduced a rhythmic quality to the façade. Strategic voids were included to create visual connections with the green spaces situated between the new curtain façade and the existing structure. This interplay between transparency and opacity brought a dynamic element to the building’s exterior, enhancing its interaction with the surrounding environment.
Inside, the first-floor showroom was rejuvenated with innovative solutions for displaying Exporlux’s diverse range of lighting products. A standout feature in the reception area is the striking staircase leading to the second floor, characterized by its unique form in exposed white concrete. This element is complemented by a horizontal wooden slat covering that seamlessly integrates with the adjoining wall, extending to a curved ceiling, thus creating a continuous and fluid design language.
Adding to the ambiance, the showroom and cafeteria open up to a landscaped courtyard. This outdoor space is framed by the dark mirrored glass facades of the lighting laboratory building, which reflect the courtyard’s greenery. The result is a captivating play of reflections and light, where the atmosphere shifts with the changing sunlight, creating a dynamic and inviting environment for visitors and employees alike. Through these thoughtful design interventions, Espaço Objecto has succeeded in transforming the Exporlux building into a cohesive and inspiring space that mirrors the company’s innovative spirit.
