The Modern Office of Design + Architecture (MODA) has unveiled Switch/bloc, a pioneering residential project that reimagines urban living. Located on a typical inner-city lot without a rear lane, Switch/bloc stands out with its innovative design that addresses the unique challenges of its site.

Rather than opting for a standard 4-story, double-loaded corridor building, MODA took a different approach. They envisioned units that span the entire length of the building without being interrupted by corridors. The result is a dynamic, switchback layout that stretches units over two floors, minimizing the need for internal public corridors.

The design strategically divides the building into public and private spaces. Public areas like kitchens, living rooms, and dining spaces are placed at the front, engaging with the streetscape. Private spaces such as bedrooms and home offices are located at the back, offering tranquility and privacy. This arrangement not only maximizes light and space but also creates a harmonious living environment.

Switch/bloc’s unique structure features interlocking and stacking units, reducing the need for multiple access corridors. This clever use of space allows for a variety of unit types and sizes, making the project more inclusive and suitable for families. The design promotes a sense of community while providing practical living solutions.

The west façade of the building is lively and open, with balconies and large windows that connect residents to the street. In contrast, the east façade is more secluded, providing privacy and morning sunlight for the bedrooms and home offices. This thoughtful design ensures a comfortable and enjoyable living experience.

Switch/bloc sets a new standard for multi-residential housing in Calgary. By rethinking traditional layouts and embracing innovative design, MODA has created a project that is both functional and inclusive. This contemporary take on urban living not only addresses the needs of modern families but also enhances the community and public realm.
