BONTEA, originally rooted in Menghai, Yunnan, a region known for its rich tea heritage, has brought its philosophy to Beijing with a newly designed tearoom. Situated in the bustling Wangjing business district, the space features a circular glass curtain wall that makes the interior fully visible to passersby. Fon Studio took on the challenge of designing a space that harmonizes the brand’s essence with its transparent and open architecture.

Reimagining the Value of Time

Guided by the concept of “Reimagining the Value of Time,” BONTEA’s design embraces the brand’s century-long history of Pu’er tea with a fresh spatial interpretation. The glass facade offers a sense of openness, while a sculptural shell structure within creates depth and draws the eye. The design’s minimalist approach underscores BONTEA’s focus on reinvention and modernity, presenting a sleek yet inviting atmosphere.

A Versatile Space for Cultural Exchange

Moving beyond the conventional retail model, Fon Studio dedicated nearly a third of the space to an adaptable “theater.” This multi-functional area serves as a cultural platform for diverse activities, such as exhibitions, tea tastings, lectures, and performances. The versatility of this space reflects BONTEA’s commitment to encouraging community and cultural exchange.

The entrance welcomes visitors with an open foyer, transitioning them into the tearoom. Stainless steel display cabinets, designed to be movable, provide flexibility in showcasing products while adapting to the room’s layout. At the center of the space lies a tea table, serving as the heart of interaction, where guests can taste teas and learn about their origins.

The design emphasizes both functionality and aesthetics, redefining retail spaces to reflect the depth of BONTEA’s tea culture. Using contemporary design elements, the tearoom expresses the vibrancy and richness of a century-old tradition.

Natural Textures and Warm Tones

Inside, natural textures take center stage. OSB panels with visible wood grain evoke the texture of Pu’er tea cakes, subtly connecting the space to its core product. Warm grey tones complement the glass facade, balancing the modern design with a sense of comfort and familiarity.

Private Rooms

Four private rooms by the windows offer box-like spaces of varying sizes, providing zones for an intimate tea experience. These rooms integrate interior and exterior views, allowing guests to enjoy a fluid and peaceful environment. Each room reflects a unique interpretation of tea, showcasing its complexity through thoughtful design that emphasizes texture, aroma, and layers.
