MED chair made a comeback earlier in June for Salone del Mobile 2022 as part of the Acerbis Remasters collection. The MED chair is one of the most celebrated designs by furniture designers Giotto Stoppino and Lodovico Acerbis. The chair is a true master of Giotto and Lodovico’s dedication to experimenting with innovative materials in furniture design.
MED chair is designed to emphasise the best of curved wood and design craftsmanship needed to create such a chair. While you may not recognize instantly the design is meant to to honour the shape of New York city’s widely known landmark – the Flatiron Building located on Madison Avenue. The design is complementary to the Madison bookcase design also created by Giotto Stoppino and Lodovico Acerbis. The chair’s name also holds origin from Madison.
The design was initially revealed almost forty years ago, today’s re-edition respects the original design drawing from the archival material found at the Acerbic historic archive. Acerbis enlisted for the redesign the creative directors of Acerbis – Francesco Meda and David Lopez Quincoces. For the contemporary reinterpretation the designers have reworked the original’s proportions and finishes.
The new MED chair comes with structure colored in the dark stained walnut nuances as well as solid black stained ash. The Med Chair seat and back are crafted in curved plywood available with fabric or leather upholstering. The 2022 version honours the original design by bringing forth the unique design lines of the original MED Chair.
Acerbis is known for some of the most iconic furniture pieces in Italian design. Some of the famed designers working with Acerbis were Giotto Stoppino, Massimo and Lella Vignelli, Vico Magistretti, Nanda Vigo and Gianfranco Frattini.
