Connaught Gardens by Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects built on a unique site near Highgate Woods accommodates seven contemporary houses. The steeply sloping site containing a fine group of mature trees has been exploited to create lower ground dining spaces which open onto the rear gardens and large, high level secret terraces hidden between the roof eaves to provide dramatic long views.
The prominent rear elevation is faced with cedar shingles giving a layered appearance, like the bark of a tree – a house in the woods. The front elevation in contrast relates to the black and white vernacular of surrounding Victorian terraces. The end house, where the different materials meet, is composed with the proportions of a double-fronted villa, extending between the trees to create 'outdoor rooms' in the landscape.
