On Thursday, December 12th, PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE will reveal its latest flagship store at 14 Kenmare Street in New York City. Positioned at the bustling intersection of Elizabeth and Kenmare Streets, this store marks a significant addition to the Nolita neighborhood, known for its eclectic mix of boutiques, art galleries, and lively street culture. It’s located on the ground floor of Tadao Ando’s first New York building, an architectural gem and the renowned architect’s initial residential project outside Asia.
The space, designed by Japanese firm MOMENT, spans 2,224 square feet and boasts 60 feet of street frontage on Kenmare Street. Its design embraces an industrial aesthetic, connecting with the urban energy of its surroundings. Sharp lines and sleek finishes define the interior, with lighting rails embedded in polished steel plates overhead. White molded resin-paneled walls evoke the dynamic pleats that are central to the brand’s identity. Rough concrete floors provide a contrast to the glossy and milky white surfaces on tabletops and rail structures.
To celebrate the opening, the store will exclusively feature the SOIL & LEAF series. This collection of pleated tops, skirts, and dresses reflects the brand’s innovative design ethos.
A Legacy of Innovation
Since its spring summer 1994 debut, PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE has embraced an innovative approach to fashion. Based on a pleating technique from the 1988 women’s collection, the line has redefined clothing. By developing fabrics from original yarn and applying advanced garment pleating technology, the brand creates pieces designed for modern living. What sets PLEATS PLEASE apart is its commitment to practicality without compromising on creativity. Garments are sewn and pleated as a final step, creating lightweight, machine-washable pieces. These designs adapt effortlessly to the body’s movement. These designs provide a customizable silhouette, highlighting individuality and ease.
