Beijing-based Studio Vapore has partnered with the Western Academy of Beijing to renovate its elementary school library, turning it into a dynamic learning environment. The redesigned space moves beyond the traditional library model, offering a multifunctional setting that encourages creativity, interaction, and discovery. With an approach inspired by classic children’s literature, the project introduces immersive design elements that support both independent learning and collaborative activities.

A Library Built for Exploration
The renovation focuses on creating a flexible and engaging space where students can move between different zones designed to improve their reading and learning experiences. Themed areas throughout the library are defined by custom-built platforms at varying heights, transforming sections into reading nooks, study spaces, and organizational hubs for the school’s diverse book collections.
Among the standout features is a bamboo forest platform, offering a serene space for quiet reading, while a village-themed area, complete with a hut and cave, provides a setting for group storytelling and interactive activities. A Tibetan-inspired storytelling tower sits at the heart of the library, leading up to a hang-out net, where students can relax and engage in discussions. Additionally, modular circular bookshelves allow for adaptable layouts, catering to both small group collaboration and focused individual study.

The library’s color palette draws inspiration from traditional Chinese temples, introducing a sense of warmth that complements the structural elements. The design integrates cultural influences while maintaining an inviting and modern educational setting.
Interactive Features That Encourage Learning
To create an immersive and playful atmosphere, Studio Vapore incorporated a variety of interactive elements that engage students beyond reading. Whispering tubes, periscopes, and hidden crystals introduce sensory and tactile experiences, sparking curiosity and imagination. These features encourage children to interact with their environment in ways that promote discovery and engagement.

Acoustic panels were strategically placed throughout the space to maintain a balanced atmosphere, allowing multiple activities to take place simultaneously without causing distractions. This ensures that while some students engage in group discussions or interactive storytelling, others can still enjoy quiet reading and focused study.
A Thoughtful Approach to Educational Spaces
The renovation of the Western Academy of Beijing’s elementary library showcases Studio Vapore’s approach to designing functional and inspiring educational spaces. The design incorporates cultural references, interactive features, and adaptable layouts. As a result, the library now serves as a hub for creativity, collaboration, and learning.
